The Rules
So just like with the Best Girl 3.0 Contest I ran last month, we're going to be using AnimeBracket and the exact same methods to be fair to both genders.
I know allowing all previous winners doesn't sit well with some people but I was able to think of a compromise. In future Guy/Girl contests after this one, I'm thinking of creating a mini Tournament of Champions bracket separate after the main bracket for each gender.
So for example for Girls. I would have one for Girls Main Bracket (Kurisu vs Rin, and Kazuki vs Best Girl 4 Winner), One for UTL Girls (Kazusa vs Misaki, winner of that plays Best UTL Girl 4 Winner)
For Guys I would have one for Guys Main Bracket (Battler vs Best Guy 3.0 Winner, Yuuji vs Best Guy 4.0 Winner). Unfortunately, I'm not sure who won Best Guy 1 UTL side and I think many people would agree TK (Angel Beats) might not be the best rep for a UTL Guy rep so there may not be a Champions tourney for UTL guys right away for Best Guy 4.0 but we'll see.
That said for THIS contest, Best Guy 3.0, any male character is allowed in. This is to figure out if anyone other than Yuuji or Battler is considered the best in people's eyes here in straight up head to head matches.
For those who aren't familiar with anime bracket the quick and dirty of how it's run will be:
Step 1) Nomination Phase: People nominate as many characters as they like. It only takes one nomination for a guy to go the next phase. This will last for about 7-10 days since last time some people missed nomination phase.
Step 2) Elimination Phase: You simply vote for the characters you want to see in the contest, as many or as few as you like. Similarly done in previous contests but all streamlined through anime bracket. It also determines the seeding of the characters in the bracket. This should take about another 7-10 days since I don't want to actually run the contest until Christmas + New Years vacations are over.
Step 3) Voting! This is straightforward and I want to try to have every available match votable and have polls run for roughly 48 hours each.
I plan to have two brackets. The main bracket where any guy in visual novels is allowed. Another that's limited to guys that are in Untranslated Visual Novels. You can still nominate UTL guys in the main bracket but they are not guaranteed to do well or even make it in.
The main bracket will have either 128 or 256 guys (dependent on nomination phase).
Now as far as rules for nominations go:
- It's required to nominate the Character Name, Visual Novel of origination, and some kind of picture
- The character needs to be on vndb, and have originated in a visual novel
- That said you do NOT need to provide a vndb link when nominating characters, I can do the research to see if the character actually exists or not.
- The characters you nominate have to be guys or have canonically become guys at some point in the story
- You can nominate as many characters as you want BUT make sure to review the current list of entrants as a character only needs 1 nomination to get in. I'll be removing any duplicates before Elimination phase
- When nominating for the main bracket, do First/Given Name first. This is to match what I ended up doing for the girls' brackets.
- Make sure the character picture you choose is from the visual novel itself. Biggest preference is an in-game sprite but some MCs don't have that. If one doesn't exist try to use whatever's on vndb character page, but if not just use something from an anime/manga adaptation.
- If possible when nominating a character and choosing a picture, try to refrain from using spoilers if possible. If it's impossible to nominate a character without spoiling their full identity/name/picture then just nominate them as is.
